Protective roof/electrical shielding on both sides of the bridge over the railway tracks at Karlskrona, Sweden. The protective shield construction consists of angled stainless steel posts and 12 mm Hammerglass panels. Drainage is directed onto the road, ensuring that neither meltwater nor rainwater can drip onto the overhead power lines.
As the screen was installed in connection with a complete bridge renovation, the base plates of the screen posts could be mounted underneath the railing posts. Otherwise, a solution using a robust clamp around the base of the railing post, combined with bolted anchoring to the bridge edge girder is offered. To determine the correct dimensions for posts and glass, a snow and wind load simulation was carried out. The watertight and tamper-proof solution conforms to the electrical safety guidelines for electrically protective roof structures for installation on bridges over railways.
This project served as a pilot for the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) in their search for a modern protective roof over overhead lines.
